A two per cent fare hike for Transit Windsor

It will cost you a few cents more to ride Transit Windsor starting July 1.

After being approved earlier this year by Windsor City Council, the transit authority will raise fares by two per cent starting on Canada Day.

According to the fare structure shown on the Transit Windsor website, a one-way fare for riders 13 and older will go up from $3.05 each way to $3.10, including a two-hour transfer. The cost of a day pass will rise from $9.20 to $9.40.

A Smart Ride pass, used in five or ten-ride increments, will also go up 25 cents to $13.15 for five rides and $26.30 for ten rides for an adult. Senior and youth passes will go up 20 cents for five rides to $10.30 and 40 cents for ten rides to $20.60.

Each new Smart Card will be subject to a $1 fee on July 1. Riders with an existing card will not be charged the fee up to June 30. Customers will be able to purchase passes at the current rate through that day.

Tunnel bus service, which was suspended in March 2020 due to border closures, will stay the same at $5 one-way and $10 round-trip once cross-border service resumes.

The fare restructuring comes as Transit Windsor rolls out an updated fleet and new technology. The city has accepted delivery of 19 new clean-diesel buses, which lower emissions. There will be 70 new bus shelters throughout the city, along with 147 new concrete pads to improve accessibility.

"Transit Windsor is continually aiming to improve the riding experience for our customers, and these latest changes will definitely help," said Executive Director Tyson Cragg in a media release. "By starting the implementations now, we’ll be better able to serve our returning riders when COVID-19 restrictions are lifted, and full service can once again be offered."

Due to the pandemic, Transit Windsor buses are currently operating on a Saturday schedule from Monday through Saturday. The Sunday schedule runs on Sundays and holidays.

Complete information on the fare increases can be found on the Transit Windsor website.
