WECHU reports 20 new cases of COVID-19

The Windsor Essex County Health Unit reported 20 new cases of COVID-19 on Monday.

There are 165 active cases in the community, and 91 of them have been identified as variants of concern.

Local hospitals are treating 19 patients from Windsor-Essex with COVID-19. Among those, seven are being treated in the intensive care unit.

The health unit is monitoring six active outbreaks in the region. Most of the outbreaks are connected to workplaces, and the other is at the Southwest Detention Centre.

To date, local health care providers have administered over 305,545 vaccines in the region. Over 215,557 people have received one dose, and 44,994 have received both doses. That’s 73.2 per cent of adults that have been partially vaccinated now. Another 13.2 per cent are fully vaccinated.

All residents over the age of 12 are now eligible to receive their first dose. Residents over the age of 70 and those who received their first dose in March can book for their second dose.

Medical Officer of Health Dr. Wajid Ahmed expects to align with the health unit's booking system to align with the provincial one. It is allowing anyone who received their first dose on or before April 18 to book their second dose by the end of the week.

“We want to make sure that there was some kind of breakage because the numbers we are talking about are very high. We are talking about almost 65,000- 70,000 people who received the vaccine in that timeline,” said Dr. Ahmed. “We made that conscious effort to break it into two halves so the people who received their vaccine from March 8- March 31st will have an opportunity to book their vaccine appointment before the next batch will open up.”

Pharmacies and primary care providers also continue to administer vaccines.
