New summer sessions offered to prepare for grade 9 math

The Greater Essex County District School Board invites grade eight students to sign up for a new summer math program in August.

Those entering grade nine will get a leg-up before tackling the new math curriculum in September.

Earlier this month, Education Minister announced his government would de-stream grade nine math. Applied math will no longer exist at that grade level, and the new curriculum will focus more on coding, data literacy, and financial literacy.

Superintendent of Student Success Josh Canty said the online morning sessions from August 16 to August 27 would help prepare students for their new course.

"Some of them were projected to be going into applied," he said. "We want to make sure they get the extra help and remediation they need."

He also said students who take part might meet their new math teacher before everyone else.

"We're hoping that we can get a teacher from each school to be a part of this program, so the students will meet some of the classmates that they're going to have and potentially the math teacher they're going to have once they do go to secondary school," explained Canty.

Canty admitted math has a bad reputation, and he hopes students will reconsider their view of the discipline.

"We have them enjoy doing math and seeing themselves in the math and seeing how math can improve their lives," he said. "Just making it more relevant."

Interested students need to apply by 3 p.m. Friday, July 2.

Canty said there is no limit on how many can apply, and he hopes to get at least 450 students.
