Tunnel raises tolls on August 9

Just as Canada welcomes back fully vaccinated Americans through its land crossings, the Windsor-Detroit Tunnel is raising the toll.

"This is the first rate increase we've had in six years," said CEO Carolyn Brown. "During that time, we've spent $20-million in upgrades."

During those upgrades, Windsor-Detroit Borderlink Limited chose not to increase tolls. Now that the work on the ceiling is done, the board approved the rate increase to synchronize with rates charged on the Detroit side.

Starting August 9, the Canadian rate for passenger vehicles will increase to $6.50 or $5.00 USD. For those with a Nexpress pass, it will be $5.15 or $3.95 USD.

The toll for buses is going up to $9.75 or $7.50 USD, and $9.25 with a Nexpress pass or $7.00 USD.

Travellers are reminded collection on the U.S. side of the tunnel is cashless. On the Canadian side, cash will be accepted until the end of the year.

From Canada to the U.S., only essential traffic is allowed through until at least August 21.
