As the City of Windsor prepares to open some of its most popular facilities, upper levels of government are helping to safeguard them against the spread of COVID-19.
The city is receiving $3.2 million in funding to make improvements to 18 buildings. The federal government is investing $2,563,445 through the COVID-19 Resilience Stream of the Investing in Canada Infrastructure Program, while the provincial government is contributing $640,861.
With those funds, the city will make improvements to facilities like the Gino Marcus Community Centre and the WFCU Centre which will include automatic door openers and touchless features in washrooms facilities.
"Hygiene and sanitation, of course, have taken a prominent role as we work through this COVID pandemic together and it is a priority for us to be ready once these buildings open to the public," said Windsor Mayor Drew Dilkens.
Dilkens says the planned improvements will not delay the opening of any facilities.
The funding will also be used toward upgrading several multi-use trails, bike trails, and park trails in the community.
