Over 50 COVID-19 cases in Windsor-Essex Thursday

The number of active COVID-19 cases across the region continues to climb as the Windsor-Essex County Health Unit added another 51 new ones to the total Thursday morning.

Of those, public health officials are still trying to find out how 26 people were infected with the virus. They know 13 caught it from close contact with another case they are already tracking, while another nine caught it in the community. Two infections are related to travel, and one comes from a community outbreak.

The total number of active cases within the region is now 324.

Yesterday, the health unit reported seven outbreaks in the community, including one traced back to a wedding in Tecumseh where 20 people, many of whom live outside the region, were infected.

An outbreak at the Village at St. Clair long-term care home is ongoing after three staff members tested positive for the virus, and five others are in workplaces across the region.

There are seven people in the hospital currently. Windsor Regional Hospital says five of them are either unvaccinated or have only had one dose. None of them are in intensive care as of the time of the report.

So far, 266,665 residents in Windsor-Essex, or 70.3 per cent of the population who are 12 or older, are fully vaccinated.

Across Ontario, 531 new infections were reported Thursday, along with 17 new deaths from the virus.  15 of those deaths occurred at least two months ago, but are being added to the total of 9,448 now as part of an ongoing data cleanup.

The province also reported there are now 4,243 active cases across Ontario.
