Masse continues fight for air traffic control tower

The NDP candidate for Windsor-West says he will fight to protect air service in Canada.

Brian Masse says his private members' bill to provide the Transport Minister with the power to remove airports from NAV Canada studies will protect service moving forward.

Masse first introduced the bill in March, after NAV Canada announced it was doing a study of seven airport towers across Canada which included the air traffic control tower in Windsor.

In April, NAV Canada announced that they were suspending the studies and maintaining air traffic control services at all airports.

"The pilots, the airport workers, flight instructors, passengers, cargo shippers, the business community, and all local airport stakeholders along with the Mayor, the City of Windsor, and Brian Masse fought to force Nav Canada to stop their study to eliminate the flight control tower services at the airport. We won this time. But to ensure air traffic control services are permanently maintained we need the private members' bill that Brian introduced to become law," stated flight instructor Dante Albano.

Masse indicated he would continue to fight for the Minister of Transport to have the power to remove an airport from a NAV Canada study to make sure service is maintained in the future.

“This legislative change will allow the Transport Minister to take practical and decisive action to remove Windsor or any other airports from any NAV Canada study, preventing the elimination of flight control services. Additionally, this rebalances the power between the government and Nav Canada appropriately since all infrastructure, such as airports, need to be governed in the public’s interest rather than a private company’s,” stated Masse.

Masse is running for the Federal NDP in the upcoming election. He faces Liberal candidate Sandra Pupatello and Conservative candidate Anthony Orlando. Election day is September 20, 2021.
