Dismissals continue at local English Catholic board

Three Windsor-Essex Catholic schools the latest to send students home due to a positive case of COVID-19.

The Windsor-Essex Catholic District School Board announced Monday afternoon that it had dismissed two classes of students from St. Anne's Catholic High School in Lakeshore after one student tested positive for the virus.

Later Monday evening, it was announced that two classes were dismissed at L.A. Desmarais Catholic Elementary School due to two positive cases there, and two classes at St. Joseph's Catholic High School, bringing the latter school's total to four classes.

The board did not disclose the number of students affected in these dismissals, but spokesman Stephen Fields said the usual protocol was followed.

"We have been working with the Health Unit by providing lists of students and staff who may have been directly affected," said Fields in an email to Blackburn News. "The health unit is contacting any individuals, both students and staff, who may have been affected, and will give directions for them to follow."

The affected students have been directed not to attend in-person classes Tuesday. Parents are asked to monitor their children for symptoms, and if they feel ill, keep them home and contact their health care provider for additional instructions.

As of Monday evening, the board had dismissed at least 300 students. There are now ten confirmed cases of COVID-19 in the English Catholic board, but there has been no in-class spread. Only one of the ten cases involves a teacher or staff member.

Meanwhile, the Greater Essex County District School Board added five additional students to its total of eight. There is one new case apiece at Leamington DSS, Sandwich West Public School, Sandwich Secondary School, Westgate, and Westview Freedom Academy. The GECDSB does not comment on the number of students involved.
