Jobless rate falls 0.2 percentage points in September

Windsor's unemployment rate improved slightly last month but is still the highest in Canada.

Statistics Canada's Labour Force Survey said it was 10.4 per cent, down from 10.6 per cent in August. September was the third consecutive month the rate fell in Windsor.

The national and the Ontario jobless rates fell too.

Across Canada, the unemployment rate fell for the fourth consecutive month to 6.9 per cent as the economy added 157,000 positions. Not only is that the lowest since the start of the pandemic, but the agency also said the country regained pre-pandemic employment levels.

The unemployment rate in February 2020 was 5.7 per cent, still below last month's showing, but Statistics Canada said the population change accounted for the discrepancy.

The service sector made the greatest gains. Public administration added 37,000 positions, while employment was up by 33,000 in culture and recreation and 30,000 in professional, scientific, and technical services.

Manufacturing added another 22,000 jobs.

Employment also grew for the fourth consecutive month across Ontario. The province added 74,000 new jobs, virtually all of them full-time. There was a drop in accommodation and food services, but information, culture and recreation, finance, real estate, and rental and leasing grew.

Statistics Canada surveyed Canadians between September 12 and September 18.
