Family of hit and run victim appeals to driver

The family of the man killed in a hit and run accident last week is pleading with the person responsible to come forward.

Around 7 a.m. October 15, the man in his early 80s was hit by a vehicle on Janette Avenue at Elliott Street West. Around a minute later, the driver of another vehicle saw the man in the road and called for help.

The man was taken to the hospital but later succumbed to his injuries. He has not been identified at the request of his family.

"It's always heartbreaking when I think of my father is hit by the car and lies there without any help. If the driver had stopped and help my father... he had a good chance," said the man's son as he was overcome by emotion.

The Windsor Police Service is looking to identify two vehicles of interest that were seen on surveillance footage in the area around the time of the collision.

Staff Sergeant Dave Tennent says after reviewing hours of video surveillance footage they strongly believe a black Chevrolet Equinox was involved in the collision.

"We don't believe this vehicle was travelling at a high rate of speed, dangerously, or recklessly. I believe in my heart that this was somebody that was going to work, coming from work," said Tennent. "I think someone panicked and they left the scene and they didn't know what to do. Please that person, I'm reaching out to that person, call us because we are going to find you eventually. We will go to every vehicle registered in Essex County."

The vehicle was seen travelling eastbound on Giles Boulevard from Janette Avenue following the collision. Police tracked it to Walker Road through surveillance video.

"So I hope, if anyone knows anything, any information please call and help us," said the son.

It is likely that there was damage to the vehicle due to the collision. Investigators are appealing to car repair shops to contact them if a 2005-2009 Chevrolet Equinox is brought into their shop.

Investigators are also looking to speak with the driver of a second vehicle seen in the area around the time of the incident. This is described as a black, boxy SUV, possibly a jeep. This vehicle is seen on surveillance footage in the area around 7 a.m. on multiple days. Officers believe the driver may work in the area. They are appealing to this driver to come forward as a possible witness.

Anyone with information is asked to contact Windsor Police Major Crime Unit at 519-255-6700 ext. 4830, ext. 4000 (after hours), Crime Stoppers anonymously at 519-258-8477 (TIPS) or online at www.catchcrooks.com.
