NDP says CRB is still needed

Windsor West MP is urging Prime Minister Justin Trudeau to return to parliament to reverse his decision to stop the Canadian Recovery Benefit.

Brian Masse said there are still many people, like employees of Caesar's Windsor, who are still out of work.

“The COVID-19 pandemic has been very difficult for a lot of families in Windsor-Essex and across Canada. People have lost their jobs, like our Caesar’s Windsor employees, and others have been forced to close their businesses. Thousands have relied on supports such as CRB to get by,” said Masse. “The pandemic is not over, people still need these supports. It is imperative that the Liberals reverse their decision to cut these vital supports."

The Canadian Recovery benefit ended on October 23, 2021. If you are eligible, you can only apply for open CRB periods, up to 60 days after each period has ended.

According to the NDP, there were still at least 900,000 people across Canada using the CRB when it was announced the program would end.

“In the past week, we’ve heard from hundreds of Canadians across the country who are devastated by the Liberal government’s decision to cut their support. Some people are facing eviction from their homes, others are afraid they can’t afford enough food for their families. These are not choices people should have to face,” said NDP Leader, Jagmeet Singh.

Masse and the NDP sent a letter to Ministers Freeland, Qualtrough and O'Reagan asking for immediate action to address the problem.

Parliament is set to return on November 22.
