Windsor police have asked people to avoid the area near Stellantis' Windsor Assembly Plant after an explosion was reported.
Police were called shortly before 6 p.m. to Chrysler Centre Drive, on the east side of the plant property. Few details have been released but investigators say an explosion took place in the area.
Stellantis Canada spokesperson Lou Ann Gosselin told WindsorNewsToday.ca that the company is cooperating and that the incident happened in an unoccupied area.
"We are actively investigating the situation and are cooperating with authorities," said Gosselin. "Out of an abundance of caution, we have evacuated the plant. Our employee health and safety, as well as the safety of the community, are our top priority. We will provide more information when it becomes available."
No injuries have been reported.
Just before 11 p.m., Local Unifor 444 tweeted that the plant had been cleared to return to normal business for the midnight shift and that all Friday shifts will report to work at regular start times.
The Windsor police's Explosive Disposal Unit has been called to determine a cause.
People were being to stay away from the area of Chrysler Centre, Tecumseh Road East, and Drouillard Road.
