High school teachers with English Catholic school board have a new contract

About 500 secondary school teachers with the Windsor-Essex Catholic District School Board have a new contract.

After several months of negotiations, the school board and the Windsor-Essex secondary unit of the Ontario English Catholic Teachers' Association reached on Thursday.

It's not releasing any details until teachers and board trustees can vote on it. For teachers, that vote could come before the end of the month and in early December for trustees.

The deal reached covers local issues. The Ministry of Education and the Ontario English Catholic Teachers Association reached an agreement on central issues in March 2020.

"This is a fair agreement for both the board and our secondary school teachers," said Director of Education Emelda Byrne. "It's a fiscally responsible contract that acknowledges the current circumstances in which we are currently operating, but also the contributions of these valued employees."

President of OECTA's Windsor-Essex secondary unit, Joe Brannagan, is also pleased.

"It includes some important gains for our members, and we will be endorsing it when we bring it to them [teachers] for ratification," he said.

The board approved agreements with its elementary teachers in March 2021 and January 2021 for its occasional teachers.
