COVID-19 claims another Windsor Essex resident

The Windsor Essex County Health Unit reported one new death and 209 new cases of COVID-19 on Friday.

A man in his 80s passed away after testing positive for the virus. There have been 525 deaths associated with COVID-19 since the start of the pandemic.

There are 3,563 known active cases in the community. However, due to current testing criteria that number does not represent the true burden of disease in the community.

Local hospitals are treating 128 patients with COVID-19.

Windsor Regional Hospital has 96 in its care and 65 of them have been admitted primarily for the treatment of the virus. There are 11 patients in the intensive care unit, of whom two are fully vaccinated, one is partially vaccinated, and eight are unvaccinated.

Erie Shores Health Care is treating 13 patients who have tested positive for COVID-19 and 11 of them have been admitted primarily for complications of the virus. Among the patients who have been admitted, eight are unvaccinated and three are fully vaccinated.

Hotel-Dieu Grace Healthcare has 21 patients in its care who have tested positive.

The health unit is monitoring outbreaks at 18 workplaces, 34 community settings, 28 long-term care or retirement homes, and 11 hospital units.

The region continues to make strides with vaccination efforts. To date, nearly 80 per cent of the eligible population has received two doses of a COVID-19 vaccine.
