COVID-19 hospitalizations in Windsor-Essex hold steady

Hospitals in Windsor-Essex have not seen a significant increase in patients being treated for COVID-19 in several days.

As of 3:30 p.m. Wednesday, the region's three hospital systems reported a total of 74 patients with COVID-19. The number has hovered around that mark since Monday.

At Windsor Regional Hospital, there are 56 patients with COVID-19. Of those, 35 are there because of COVID-19 while the rest are in hospital for other reasons, but have tested positive. Thirty-two of the 56 patients are fully vaccinated, while 22 are either partially vaccinated or not at all. There are eight patients in intensive care, with six being treated for COVID-19. The number of vaccinated and unvaccinated patients was split at four apiece.

Hotel-Dieu Grace Healthcare reported a total of four COVID-19 patients admitted in its most recent report.

At Erie Shores Healthcare in Leamington, there are 14 patients with COVID-19. Eight are in hospital because of the virus. Nine of those patients were fully vaccinated.

The Windsor-Essex County Health Unit reported 186 new cases of COVID-19 in high-risk settings Wednesday, and the active caseload is at 1,204.

Three patients have passed away, including a woman in her 50s living in the community. A man and woman in their 70s from the community also died from the virus. The total Windsor-Essex death toll is now at 554.

For vaccinations, 85.5 per cent of all Windsor-Essex residents aged five and older have had at least one dose. That percentage dips to 81.2 per cent for those with both doses of a vaccine. Just over half of Windsor-Essex adults have had a booster shot.
