Lakeshore leads county in rate of population growth, Tecumseh barely changes

Between 2016 and 2021, almost 4,000 more people called Lakeshore home.

The municipality enjoyed a 10.4 per cent jump in its population, according to the 2021 census.

Statistics Canada released population data from the census this week. It shows how Lakeshore went from 36,611 residents to 40,410 in five years.

"It's no surprise to us," said Mayor Tom Bain. "We know how great of a place Lakeshore is to live, work, and play."

While Lakeshore is happy to boost its population, growth in the past couple of decades has had its challenges, including building new infrastructure to support the addition of 1,000 new homes in just the past five years.

"Our priority is managing that growth sustainably and responsibly," added Bain.

Last year, the municipality broke ground on an expansion to the Denis St. Pierre Water Pollution Control Plant. There have also been upgrades to many of its roads to accommodate the increase in traffic.

Lasalle had the second greatest increase in residents within that five-year timeframe. In 2016, 30,180 people called the town home. Just five years later, that increased by 8.4 per cent to 32,721. The number of new homes increased by about 1,050.

Leamington rounded out the top three fastest-growing communities in Essex County by going from 27,595 residents to 29,680, an increase of 7.6 per cent.

Amherstburg's population grew by 7.2 per cent from 21,936 to 23,524 by 2021.

In Essex, the population grew 3.9 per cent as an additional 789 people called it home. Five years ago, it was 20,427. Last year, it was 21,216.

Kingsville's population saw the second slowest rate of growth at 2.6 per cent as it went from 21,552 to 22,119.

The number of residents living in Tecumseh didn't change much at all. An increase from 23,229 to 23,300, or one person, accounted for a 0.3 per cent increase.

While Windsor's population grew by six per cent, 217,188 to 229,660 during that time frame, the overall growth rate in the county was 6.1 per cent. A total of 192,700 people now live in the county.
