Active COVID-19 outbreaks still on the decline in Windsor-Essex

As the COVID-19 Omicron variant loosens its grip on Windsor-Essex, the number of outbreaks in the region continues to drop.

The Windsor-Essex County Health Unit reported Wednesday afternoon that the number of active outbreaks is at 29, down from 32 on Tuesday.

Thirteen of the current outbreaks are in the community, 11 are in long-term care facilities, three are in workplaces, and two are in hospital units at Windsor Regional Hospital's Ouellette campus.

The number of hospitalized patients in the region is still going down. As of noon Wednesday, there was a total of 36 people in two of Windsor-Essex's three hospital systems. WRH had 25 cases, with only 11 admitted with COVID-19 as the chief complaint. Seventeen of the patients were fully vaccinated, the rest either partially vaccinated or not at all. Three patients are in intensive care, all fully vaccinated.

The rest of the currently hospitalized patients are at Erie Shores Healthcare, with 11. Seven of them are admitted primarily for the virus. Eight of the 11 patients have had two vaccine doses.

The health unit reported 117 new high-risk cases Wednesday, though the actual number may be higher due to current testing guidelines. No new deaths were reported.

The number of active cases is 523, from 496 on Tuesday.
