YQG prepping for busy travel season

The CEO of the Windsor International Airport is gearing up for a busy travel season now that the federal government has eased travel restrictions.

On Tuesday, the government announced international flights will once again be allowed at the Windsor airport and other small Canadian airports starting February 28, 2022. The government has also removed its travel advisory telling Canadians to avoid non-essential travel.

"As we move into the spring and summer, we're looking at a pretty high demand to get back to visiting loved ones or travelling on vacation or doing business," said airport CEO Mark Galvin.

Currently, Sunwing flies directly from Windsor to Cuba, but the return flight stops in Ottawa on the way back.

Galvin said the return of international flights to Windsor and other small airports is a step in the right direction for the industry as a whole.

"The bigger picture, as we move forward, it's a step in the right direction as we go back to some degree as normalcy," said Galvin.

He said the airport is prepared to accept international flights should the airlines wish to schedule them.
