Recreational opportunities increase in Windsor as COVID restrictions lift

As the provincial government lifts more COVID-19 restrictions, the City of Windsor has announced plans to resume recreational operations.

The most recent phase of the Ontario Road to Reopening, put into effect Thursday, lifted capacity limits on establishments where proof of vaccination is required and relaxed such limits on other businesses. With that, the City of Windsor has updated which facilities are open for people to enjoy.

At four arenas across the municipality, a total of nine ice pads are open for rentals, along with public skating at the WFCU Centre and the Capri Pizzeria Recreation Complex. Indoor skating programs such as Adult and Seniors, Parents and Tots, Little Stars, Novice Stars, Youth Hockey Skills, and Figure Skating, are available on an appointment basis. Available dates and times can be found on the City's recreation website.

The outdoor rink at Charles Clark Square is closed for the season, but the rink at Lanspeary Park will stay open as long as the weather allows.

Registration for all public skating sessions will be dropped once the rest of the guidelines are lifted, and reverted to drop-in programming. Until then, appointments are needed.

At the Windsor International Aquatic and Training Centre, drop-in swimming will resume on March 22, along with in-person Learn to Swim classes. In the meantime, swimmers will need to go online for an appointment.

Registration for winter and spring activities at the aquatic centre is now available, and the City will expand spring programming if the demand is high enough.

Windsor's historic Francois Baby House is open Tuesday through Sunday, along with the Chimczuk Museum. Masking and physical distancing are required, but not proof of vaccination.

The City is also encouraging people to dress warmly and check out the sculptures along the riverfront with the Windsor Sculpture Park. Free, self-guided tours are available year-round.

The Ontario Ministry of Health will lift the proof of vaccination requirement on March 1 as long as COVID-19 case counts and hospitalizations keep going down. However, individual businesses will still have the option of using the program.
