WECHU rescinds letter of instruction for recreational facilities

With the provincial government changing COVID-19 proof of vaccination requirements next week, the Windsor-Essex County Health Unit is making its own adjustments.

Effective immediately, the health unit has rescinded its letter of instruction requiring everyone aged 12 and older to provide proof of vaccination before entering a sports or recreation facility. The policy was first begun by the health unit in October 2021, with the latest letter of instruction implemented in November.

"The health unit is not issuing any additional orders or letters at this time as we work to align our region with the direction of the province and Ministry of Health," read the statement from the health unit. "The WECHU will continue to monitor our local situation and epidemiology as we progress through the COVID-19 pandemic."

The letter of instruction was issued as Windsor-Essex, along with the rest of Ontario, was dealing with a fourth wave of the COVID-19 pandemic. It required anyone playing a sport, coaching, or being a spectator at an indoor sports facility to show a photo ID, along with either proof of vaccination or a valid medical exemption.

The health unit said it will continue to urge people to get vaccinated, as it is the best line of defence against serious illness, and that it will continue to closely monitor case trends and make adjustments as needed.
