The Windsor-Essex County Health Unit has responded to Ontario's plan to remove most mask mandates later this month.
Ontario Chief Medical Officer of Health Dr. Kieran Moore announced Wednesday that mask mandates would be lifted at restaurants, bars, retailers, schools, and most other businesses on March 21, or the Monday after March Break.
In a media release Wednesday evening, the health unit acknowledged the efforts by the community to reach this point but suggested that those more vulnerable should stay the course.
"The pandemic is not over and each individual will need to consider their individual level of risk in their daily decisions around protecting themselves and their families from COVID-19," read the statement. "It continues to be recommended that those who feel sick stay home, and for those at an increased risk to avoid high-risk situations like poorly ventilated areas or crowded indoor spaces."
Moore stated that masks would still be required for those visiting hospitals, long-term care facilities, and other high-risk locations. The health unit said, though, that the situation remains fluid.
"All residents are encouraged to continue visiting the health unit’s website regularly to determine the current level of community risk and make their decisions accordingly," read the statement.
"Regardless of individual decisions around risk, it is important that as members of this community, we treat each other with respect and kindness as we move through this stage of the pandemic together."
The health unit also reminded residents that businesses still have the option of asking patrons to wear masks.
