Humane Society hits surgery milestone

Over the last decade, the Windsor/Essex County Humane Society (WECHS) Veterinary Clinic has completed 50,000 public spay/neuter surgeries.

A female named Cheddar was the cat to receive the milestone procedure on Saturday.

The humane society said it's already planning for the next 50,000 surgeries.

In an effort to reduce the number of homeless cats in the community the WECHS has launched the "Spay it Forward" fundraising campaign.

Donations up to $5,000 are being matched and used to subsidize surgeries for feral cats.

The WECHS Veterinary Clinic opened in 2011 to increase community access to spaying/neutering and said that it's open to anyone, with no geographic or income limitations.
