Police seize $313K in drugs, weapons in joint investigation with OPP

A pair of Windsorites face charges following a drug bust by Windsor police in partnership with Essex County provincial police.

The suspected drug trafficking investigation was launched by Ontario Provincial Police back in January Windsor police say. In March, OPP requested assistance from Windsor's Drugs and Guns Enforcement Unit (DIGS) as a suspect and an involved vehicle were believed to be in the city.

On Thursday, Windsor police announced they obtained and conducted a search warrant for a residence and the vehicle of interest the day prior. At around 5:15 p.m. Wednesday, police located the suspect who was with two other people, near a shopping centre near Tecumseh Road East and East Park Drive.

Police say all three individuals fled on foot upon noticing the officers. One of the suspects is alleged to have discarded a loaded handgun. Another is said to have dropped an item that was later determined to be illicit drugs. Officers detained the trio a short time later and the dropped items were recovered. The third suspect was released with no charges.

Later on, police conducted a warrant at a property on George Avenue near Alice Street however, no illegal items were seized. Police say the warrant executed on the vehicle in question, a black Jeep Cherokee, turned up a number of illicit drugs totalling around $313,000.

The drugs seized included approximately 250 grams of fentanyl, 1,390 grams of crystal methamphetamine, and 680 grams of cocaine.

As a result, two Windsor men age 28 and 39 face a number of drug trafficking-related charges.

The pair both face three charges of possession with the purpose of trafficking, while the 28-year-old faces additional charges of possession of a prohibited firearm without a licence, careless storage, possession of a loaded prohibited firearm without a licence, possession of a firearm while prohibited and possession of ammunition while prohibited.

None of the charges have been proven in court.
