Dilkens ends municipal emergency declaration

Windsor Mayor Drew Dilkens has ended the Declaration of a Municipal Emergency that had been in place for the last two years due to COVID-19.

“As public health guidance continues to shift, and the federal and provincial governments lift restrictions, it is evident that the pressures that called for the declaration of an emergency locally have eased, and the declaration can safely be ended,” said Dilkens.

During Monday's council meeting, councillors will consider revoking the mask mandate that was put in place in September 2020. The mandate remains in place for all City of Windsor indoor facilities, despite the provincial government lifting the mandate for most indoor public spaces as of March 21, 2022.

Even with the removal of the mandate and the end of the emergency declaration, city staff maintains they will continue to promote public health guidelines like advocating for vaccinations and wearing masks when social distancing is not possible.

“I’ve been so proud of the leadership our City staff have shown throughout the pandemic,” said Chief Administrative Office Jason Reynar. “Through getting vaccinated, working in re-assigned roles, and keeping our facilities safe and clean, they’ve shown incredible resilience. And I know that while we will all welcome this latest sign that things are improving, we will also stay focused on keeping our residents and staff safe.”
