Booster shots available Thursday in Windsor-Essex

If you're over 60, Indigenous, or live with someone Indigenous, you can book an appointment for a fourth dose of the COVID-19 vaccine starting Thursday morning.

Following the provincial announcement Wednesday that eligibility for second booster shots will expand, the Windsor-Essex County Health Unit has begun setting up a process for booking appointments for those doses.  Currently, appointments can be booked directly through participating local pharmacies and health care providers. Fourth doses will also be administered at health unit pop-up clinics throughout the community. For a schedule of pop=up clinics visit the health unit website here

The fourth dose eligibility came as the health unit reported 155 new high-risk cases of COVID-19, though that number could be an underestimate due to current testing guidelines. No new deaths were reported, but the active caseload has jumped to 394 patients.

As of 1 p.m. Wednesday, there were 48 people in Windsor-Essex hospitals being treated for COVID-19. Forty-two of those patients are at Windsor Regional Hospital, with 26 admitted primarily for the virus. Just one patient is in intensive care.

There were five patients at Hotel-Dieu Grace Healthcare at last check and one unvaccinated patient at Erie Shores Healthcare.

The number of COVID-19 cases in high-risk settings jumped by almost 73 percent Wednesday from the day before across Ontario. There were 3,444 new high-risk cases across the province and ten new deaths. There were 1,074 positive COVID-19 tests in Ontario hospitals, with 168 people in intensive care.
