Saturday is Run for Rocky Day in Windsor

An ongoing legacy project supporting Windsor-Essex's LGBTQ+ community will feature, among others, the return of an actual charity run.

The Run for Rocky Legacy Project announced on Friday, the return of the Run for Rocky five-kilometre run-walk after a five-year hiatus. The run, previously held in early April, will now be held in August, during Pride Fest weekend.

Saturday was declared Run for Rocky Day in Windsor. The Progressive Pride flag was raised Friday morning at Charles Clark Square downtown, and it will continue flying all next week.

During the coming week, the Legacy Project will begin distributing toolkits to advisors at gay-straight alliances (GSA) in area schools. The toolkits were put on hold due to the COVID-19 pandemic, but many GSA clubs are being held again in person. The toolkits represent a $4,000 investment, and more will be prepared if necessary.

A scholarship for GSA students graduating this year is offered, with the application deadline being May 1.

The Legacy Project's other key project this year is the painting of a rainbow crosswalk outside the Zehrs store in LaSalle. June 1 will feature a Pride Flag raising at the LaSalle Civic Centre, with the crosswalk's dedication on June 4.

The Run for Rocky began in 2013 and is named after Rocky Campana, a gay man who passed away at age 23 after attempting to take his own life. The most recent run was in 2017. Since then, the Legacy Project has focused on raising money for GSAs.

Information on donating funds, and applying for the scholarship, can be found at the official Run for Rocky website.
