Local artist commissioned for Tecumseh mural at Legion

Tecumseh has an artist to paint a mural honouring its veterans in time for its centennial celebrations this July.

Derkz Murals and Fine Art Inc. will create a large mural on the west-facing wall of the Royal Canadian Legion, Branch 261 building.

It will honour the town's first mayor, Colonel Paul Poisson, a World War I veteran, and pay tribute to those who have served in the Canadian Armed Forces. It will also acknowledge the 100th anniversary of the use of the poppy in November to commemorate veterans.

Town councillors authorized the mayor to finalize the $30,000 agreement. The cost is covered by a Veterans Affairs Canada grant, a second grant obtained in partnership with the Tecumseh Business Improvement Association, and sponsorship from the University of Windsor.

David Derkatz is a well-known artist locally having painted murals in downtown Windsor and on the side of the Penalty Box restaurant building at the corner of Walker Road and Tecumseh Road East.

The town has plans to erect two other murals celebrating Tecumseh's 100th birthday.

The Windsor Symphony Orchestra will perform twice during the festivities. One concert on July 2 will be at Lakewood Park, while the other is on July 4 at L'Essor High School. Both are free to the public, but seats on July 4 are limited, so residents are encouraged to make a reservation.
