Survey opens on organic waste program

Do you think a new food and organic waste program should prioritize odour mitigation over cost? Do you think it should create alternative energy?

These are just some of the questions the Essex Windsor Solid Waste Authority asks the public in a new survey before launching an organic waste program in partnership with the City of Windsor and the County of Essex.

The program should launch in 2025.

Not only will it help extend the life of the local landfill, a food and organic waste program will help Canada meet its emission targets. Rotting food in landfills produces methane gas, and it's a more potent greenhouse gas than carbon dioxide.

Almost half of all garbage in the region is food waste. The City of Windsor said only 36 per cent of all trash in Windsor-Essex gets diverted from the landfill since 2007.

The survey is open until the end of May.
