The number of COVID-19 patients needing hospital treatment has levelled off in Windsor-Essex.
According to figures announced Monday afternoon by the Windsor-Essex County Health Unit, there were 46 patients with COVID-19 in the region's three hospital systems.
The vast majority of the cases are at Windsor Regional Hospital, which reported 40 people being treated for the virus as of 3 p.m. Monday. Out of the 42 patients, 23 have been admitted because of COVID-19, while the rest were admitted for other reasons but have tested positive. Thirty-four of those people have been fully vaccinated.
Six of those admitted at Windsor Regional are in intensive care, with three of them admitted because of COVID-19, and all of them fully vaccinated.
At Erie Shores Healthcare, there were six COVID-19 patients receiving care, with three of them having the virus as their main complaint.
The health unit recorded a total of 178 new COVID-19 cases in high-risk settings, with 57 on Saturday, 59 on Sunday, and 62 Monday. The active caseload is down to 253 high-risk patients. No new deaths were reported from the weekend.
Twenty-five active outbreaks are being monitored by the health unit, with 19 of them in long-term care and retirement facilities. There were four outbreaks in hospitals and two in the community.
Beginning Tuesday, the health unit will only provide updated case numbers on Tuesdays and Thursdays during May.
