Tecumseh mayor, county warden to run for re-election

One of Windsor-Essex's longest-serving active mayors has filed to run for another four-year term.

Tecumseh Mayor Gary McNamara will try for a sixth term in the upcoming municipal elections, according to the elections page on the Town's official website.

McNamara, who is also the Essex County Warden and the chairman of the Windsor-Essex County Health Unit board of directors, is so far the only person who's expressed a desire to run for mayor. The mayor has also served as warden since 2018.

He is currently tied with Kingsville's Nelson Santos as the longest-active mayor in the region. McNamara was first elected to Tecumseh Town Council in 1991, moving up to deputy mayor in 1998 before being elected to his first mayoral term in 2003. In the municipal election four years ago, he ran unopposed.

McNamara is the second incumbent mayor in Windsor-Essex this week to declare for re-election after Leamington's Hilda MacDonald.

Three other Windsor-Essex mayors have already announced they will not run for another four-year term, Amherstburg's Aldo DiCarlo, LaSalle's Marc Bondy, and Pelee Island's Ray Durocher.

The election is on October 24.
