Gretzky commits to transfer of lands for urban park

The NDP candidate for Windsor-West is promising to transfer provincial lands to Parks Canada for the completion of the Ojibway National Urban Park.

Last week, the Ministry of Transport announced Ojibway Shores would be transferred from the Windsor Port Authority to Parks Canada for the creation of the park.

Incumbent Lisa Gretzky said if the NDP is elected, she will ensure the Ojibway Prairie Provincial Nature Reserves are part of the park.

"This is a priority for us and we will get this land transferred to Parks Canada so that the people in this area can have the National Urban Park that they deserve," said Gretzky.

She notes the Progressive Conservatives have said they support the park's creation but have not taken any action to sign over the land to the federal government.

"They kept saying they were interested, I got a personal letter, a handwritten letter, back from the minister and then several conversations with the minister saying that they're interested and they recognize the importance of it but for whatever reason, they've been dragging their feet," said Gretzky.

The City of Windsor has been working with Parks Canada since last summer to establish the urban national park.

The upcoming provincial election is June 2, 2022. Gretzky is up against Linda McCurdy for the Ontario Liberal Party, John Leontowicz for the Progressive Conservative Party, Jeremy Palko for the Ontario Party, Krysta Glovasky-Risdale for the Green Party, and Joshua Griffin for the Blue Party.
