Tecumseh will soon subsidize the cost of eradicating rats from residential properties.
Town councillors approved a pilot project this week that will allow residents to apply for a rebate if they call a pest control company selected by the municipality.
Tecumseh still has to hire the company, so the plan is short on financial details, but a report to councillors suggested the rebate would be for half the cost per property.
The program is similar to the ones in St. Catharines and Welland.
The town has put $10,000 aside for the program in this year's budget.
Rats have been an ongoing concern in Tecumseh over the past four or five years.
In 2017, the town embarked on an education program to help residents protect their properties. It also stepped up property standard enforcement. A fact sheet on rodents is posted on its webpage and social media, and public meetings were held in 2018 and 2019.
