Ceremony marks the end of an era for Downtown Mission

After more than four decades, the Downtown Mission has left its home at 664 Victoria Avenue in Downtown Windsor.

A solemn decommission ceremony marked the occasion Friday morning. The Downtown Mission's Chaplaincy Team, led by Reverand Jim Hatt, gave praise for the good works in the Mission, supporting some of the city's most vulnerable.

Those services will now be available at the Mission's other home at 875 Ouellette Avenue, not far away.

A release from the Mission said, "as a faith-based organization, we believe that God is present in our work, in our staff, our guests and all who are called to the Mission. In leaving this physical space, we are reminded that it's more than bricks and mortar. We need to remember the moments, both challenging and joyful."

The building on Victoria Avenue will become the new home for the Windsor Centre for Film, Digital Media and Creative Arts.

It received a $980,000 grant from the Ontario government to open the centre.
