Canada's biggest volunteer-run film festival has planned a big return this fall.
The Windsor International Film Festival (WIFF) announced on Friday that it will return to an in-person festival for the first time since 2019 after the last two editions went virtual due to the COVID-19 pandemic. The festival will also run for eleven days, from October 27 to November 6.
The festival also named the Toldo Foundation as its new title sponsor.
"The Toldos have a long-standing history of community building in Windsor-Essex, and we are so excited that they are again partnering with us and for such a historic return, we will be back better than ever this November," said WIFF Executive Director and Chief Programmer Vincent Georgie.
Toldo Foundation Trustee Anthony Toldo said the foundation is honoured to be part of the festival's comeback.
"We love the fun, energy, and exceptional film experiences WIFF brings every November, and we are proud to be a supporter and a champion of this cultural gem in our community," said Toldo.
"We look forward to celebrating the festival’s return and all of the excitement it brings to Downtown Windsor."
The last in-person WIFF three years ago sold over 42,000 tickets. All the events of the 2019 festival will return in November, including the Mark Boscariol 48-Hour FlickFest, the WIFF Prize in Canadian Film, WIFF Village, and Women of WIFF. The festival will also feature special screenings and appearances by guests.
In preparation for the 2022 festival, WIFF will not hold the summer drive-in film series held during the COVID-19 pandemic. However, WIFF will continue offering weekend screenings starting June 8.
