Police looking to register security cameras

The Windsor Police Service is asking residents and businesses in Windsor and Amherstburg to register their security cameras.

The camera registration would be used by officers to determine if video footage is available while investigating a crime.

"It doesn't eliminate the canvassing and the boots on the ground that we're going to do to make sure that we have all the information we need and the best information but it gives us that critical starting point that we sometimes need," said Windsor Police Constable Talya Natyshak.

Natyshak said being able to locate footage quickly could be crucial in ongoing situations.

"Minutes and seconds matter. There are a lot of cameras, it's a very very common thing and for police to have that information, that starting point on where to go to get that valuable piece of information that can progress an investigation could be crucial," said Natyshak.

The registration will give investigating officers a camera's location and contact information of the owner. It does not grant police direct access to your camera system. Officers must still get permission to view or obtain the footage.
