Bortolin not seeking re-election

One familiar name will be missing from this year's municipal election ballot in Windsor.

Ward 3 Councillor Rino Bortolin announced he will not be running for re-election after serving two terms on Windsor City Council. Bortolin considered a run for mayor this term but ultimately decided to step away from the council table.

"I will not stop being vocal on municipal issues. In fact, I may be louder and more direct than ever. I've always felt that we had an immense potential here in Windsor and working within the confines of city council has proven to be inefficient in the sense that we leave so much on the table," said Bortolin.

During his time on council, Bortolin has been known to butt heads with the mayor on many issues like public transit and has criticized what he sees as political overreach.

"We have amazing people working for us at the City of Windsor. Cultivating and nurturing that talent has been difficult at times because we blur the lines between the politically elected and administration of the city. Allowing the administration to do their work is key in harnessing that talent and continuing the progressive work and course set by all of council," said Bortolin.

Windsor Mayor Drew Dilkens congratulated Bortolin on his decision.

"I acknowledge the passion and spirit that he brought to his role as Councillor for Ward 3. I know firsthand the incredible personal toll that serving in elected office requires, especially during these past few years. As he and his family embark on a new chapter, Jane and I wish them all the very best," said Dilkens. "I am sure that Mr. Bortolin will find a way to contribute to building our City even as he steps back from Windsor City Council."

Bortolin was first elected in 2014 and has served on my committees and boards during his time on council. Bortolin chaired the Development and Heritage Committee and was part of the Windsor Public Library Board and Windsor Police Services Board.

The municipal election is on October 24, 2022.

To date, there are no candidates for the Ward 3 seat.

Ernie Lamont and Benjamin Danyluk have submitted nomination papers for the mayor's role.
