The Windsor-Essex County Health Unit urges parents to talk to their primary health care provider before booking an appointment to vaccinate their babies and preschool children against COVID-19.
Children in that age group receive many immunizations, and the health unit said the COVID-19 shot should be with other childhood shots.
"The COVID-19 vaccine is one of the many vaccines that are administered in childhood. In this context, the administration should be coordinated with other childhood vaccines," said a statement issued by the health unit on Thursday.
In the past, the health unit opened mass vaccination clinics in the region, but the last one closed in April.
It is still holding clinics in the community for those older than five. The list is on the health unit's webpage.
The Ontario government will start booking appointments for children between six months and five years on Thursday, July 28, after approving the Moderna vaccine for that age group.
The health unit says parents and caregivers can call the Provincial Vaccine Contact Centre with any questions about the vaccine at 1-833-943-3900.
