Deadline looms for those with dreams in municipal politics

If you're still contemplating running in this fall's municipal election, time is running out. The deadline is at 2 p.m. on Friday.

That's when the nomination period will close, and the field of candidates is set for the vote on October 24.

As of Thursday, five candidates were running for mayor in Windsor, including the incumbent, Drew Dilkens. Running against him is the current councillor in Ward 4, Chris Holt, along with Benjamin Danyluk, Aaron Day, and Ernie "The Baconman" Lamont.

A total of 42 people are running for one of ten seats on Windsor City Council so far, and eight incumbents are up for re-election in eight.

In the county, voters in four municipalities will choose a new mayor.

Amherstburg Mayor Aldo DiCarlo is calling it quits after two terms while Nelson Santos in Kingsville has accepted a new job as the CAO of the Township of Adjala-Tosorontio.

So far, voters in Essex will choose a mayor from two candidates, Richard Meloche, who has been the acting mayor since Larry Snively resigned this past winter after pleading guilty to charges under the Election Act, and the outspoken councillor in Ward 4, Sherry Bondy.

LaSalle's Marc Bondy is not seeking re-election.

There will be familiar names on the ballot in three other municipalities.

Lakeshore's Tom Bain will run against Tracey Bailey in a race that on Thursday included only two candidates.

In Leamington, incumbent Hilda MacDonald faces competition from two other candidates, Cris Biron and Jimmy Simoni.

At this point, the choice for mayor in Tecumseh is easy. Gary McNamara is the lone candidate.
