1,519 high school students suspended in Windsor-Essex

As of Wednesday morning, the Windsor-Essex County Health Unit still needed updated immunization records from 1,519 high school students across the region.

Those students had until Monday to update their records. Now, they are suspended from school.

It sounds like a high number, but in June, the health unit needed to get 13,000 records updated.

"We knew that given the pandemic, and other reasons, there would be a number of individuals out of date," said CEO Nicole Dupuis. "We've definitely come a long way."

Immunizations for thousands of students across the region were on hold for the past two years when COVID-19 limited opportunities to get vaccinated against other diseases.

Even as the suspension notices went out, the number of students who needed those shots was coming down.

"Yesterday, additional individuals may have gotten their vaccinations," added Dupuis, saying the health unit still needs to process their records.

Acting Medical Officer of Health Doctor Shanker Nesathurai said the suspension notices should not be a surprise.

"The health unit recognizes this is potentially disruptive, but also, I think it should be recognized there have been numerous communications to people to come up to date well before suspension day," he said.

The health unit could not say if the current number is comparable to years pre-pandemic.
