Ontario Provincial Police have charged two people after they were caught hiding in an abandoned school.
Officers from the OPP Leamington detachment were called to the former Leamington District High School on Talbot Street West after a break-and-enter complaint was registered.
OPP Constable Steven Duguay said the Essex County OPP Emergency Response Team and the Canine Unit entered the building and began to search it. OPP Police Service Dog Maximus found two men hiding.
Both men were placed under arrest without incident and trespassed from the property.
Police are using this incident to remind residents that entering any closed or abandoned property without the owner's consent is against the law. Those who do so may risk being seriously injured or even killed.
"Abandoned structures may pose numerous safety concerns including such things as structural issues, broken glass, mould, or asbestos," said Duguay.
The OPP has asked residents who spot someone trespassing in abandoned or closed buildings to give them a call at 1-888-310-1122, or in emergencies, 911.
