Dilkens, Gill make commitment to soccer community

If re-elected, incumbents Drew Dilkens and Jeewen Gill promise to install a new outdoor turf field at McHugh Park.

During a campaign announcement, the pair committed to putting the field in the next capital budget.

Dilkens said he will work with community partners to establish a cost-sharing agreement.

"A partnership will require the municipality to be involved. It's our land here so we need to be involved in helping make this happen and we want to make this happen because we know that it prolongs the season, it helps on the tourism side but most important it provides great facilities," said Dilkens.

It's estimated one turf field will cost around $3-million to install. The Essex County Soccer Club has committed $400,000 toward the project should it move forward.

The project is not currently in the 10-year capital budget plan. Dilkens said it is not uncommon to switch project priorities to meet the needs of the community.

"We have heard loud and clear that the soccer community expects that this project is going to be done. We have been talking about this for a number of years but have not been able to get lift-off. We have an opportunity to get lift off and so the commitment that I am making if re-elected is that I will deliver this project in the next term of council," said Dilkens.

The municipal election is on October 24, 2022. Advanced voting is already underway.

Also running for the position of Windsor mayor are Benjamin Danyluk, Aaron Day, Matthew Giancola, Chris Holt, Ernie Lamont, and Louis Vaupotic.

Other candidates running in Ward 7 include Sydney Brouillard-Coyle, Greg Lemay, Angelo Marignani, and Sophia Sevo.
