A campaign that started 12 years ago to inspire women living with violence to seek help continues in Windsor Tuesday night with a special ceremony.
Local officials will be in Charles Clark Square for a special tree-lighting ceremony that starts at 6 p.m.
The "Shine the Light" campaign began in London but spread to Windsor 11 years ago when survivors in Ontario requested the ceremony in their cities. It calls on community agencies, businesses, and individual citizens to work toward turning their city purple during November and end violence against women.
The local ceremony will highlight the experience of survivors who, like Yasmin, have stories of courage and change to share.
Events continue this weekend in Lanspeary Park with Bark in the Park. On November 15, the community is encouraged to wear purple. A special flag will be hoisted in City Hall Square on November 25, marking the International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women.
