Hundreds of people gathered at the Windsor Cenotaph Friday to honour Canadian veterans.
Veterans like Charles Davis of Windsor who served in the Second World War and celebrated his 100th birthday this year were in attendance along with government officials, members of the Windsor Police Service, and students.
Paul Lauzon, president of the Windsor Veterans Memorial Service Committee, said he was happy to see so many people at the cenotaph this year, especially the students.
"They're the future, they're the people that will, hopefully, carry this on and be up here when we're long gone," said Lauzon. "The people that are in attendance shows that they know freedom isn't free, they appreciate our veterans and what they went through."
The guest speaker at this year's service was Honourary Lieutenant Colonel Dr. Paul Bradford. Bradford served in Bosnia and is currently an emergency room physician at Windsor Regional Hospital. He spoke about the need to honour the sacrifices made by our veterans.
"Democracy and freedom in many nations is under threat and Canada is being pulled in. Many previously died in sacrifice with their service so that we could have the freedom we enjoy today protected. There is much we hold dear and it is important that we do not take this freedom for granted," said Dr. Bradford.
