Tecumseh deregulates taxi licenses

All taxi drivers with a valid license in Windsor and Essex County can now pick up residents in the Town of Tecumseh.

Town council voted to deregulate taxicabs, drivers, and companies within the municipality at Tuesday night's meeting.

The town has been providing Taxicab licensing since 2003. Since that time, only taxis with a town license could pick up passengers within the town boundaries.

There are currently two taxi services in Tecumseh, each with six cabs. Neither company has one that is accessible for those living with disabilities.

Administration noted the emergence of ride-sharing platforms and the rising costs of operating a taxi company as reasons to deregulate the system.

According to the report to council, the annual revenues generated by licensing the vehicles did not cover staff costs associated with the process.
