The City of Windsor is ready to reveal preliminary designs for the relocation of Sandpoint Beach.
After a drowning at the beach last summer, city council approved funding to assess the area three years ahead of schedule.
“In May of 2021, the tragic drowning of a young resident urgently called to Council’s attention the need to accelerate the review of the swimming and fishing access provided at this location. This is a fantastic family attraction, and we need to make sure that all members of our community can safely enjoy it," said Ward 7 Councillor Jeewen Gill.
Now that plans have been developed the city is looking for feedback from residents. The plan includes moving the beach around 200 meters east while placing other amenities on the west side of the property.
Commissioner of Community Services Ray Mensour said the goal is to make improvements to make the beach safer and reach the "blue flag" international standard.
"A beach that is managed sustainably, is accessible and inclusive for all, has high-quality services and safety procedures, and one that actively monitors water quality," said Mensour.
The city will be hosting two public open houses to garner feedback and answer questions about the proposed design. The open houses will be held on May 19 at the Riverside Sportsmen Club.
There is currently around $5-million set aside in the 10-year capital budget for the redevelopment. It's expected the project will cost more than that but a final estimate has not been determined.
A timeline for the completion of the project has not been determined however work will not begin this summer.
