There's no excuse for not having a working smoke alarm in Essex.
The town has 120 to give away after First Alert Canada/Resideo Products and Solutions donated them. They're available to residents on a first-come, first-serve basis.
"This is a fantastic opportunity to support our residents in need of a smoke alarm and ensure the safety of our community," said Essex Fire Chief Rick Arnel.
Those who need a smoke alarm can fill out an online form, call 519-776-7132, or visit the fire station on Alice Street.
Smoke alarms should be replaced every ten years. The batteries need to be changed annually, and homeowners should test the alarm monthly to ensure it's working.
If false alarms are a problem, Essex Fire and Rescue Services recommends moving it to another location rather than removing the batteries or buying one with a pause feature.
The services also urge residents to come up with an escape plan from your home should there be a fire and make sure everyone in the household knows what to do.
There were 133 fire-related deaths in Ontario last year, the highest number in two decades.
