A new pilot project hopes to boost local business while offering respite to 1,200 families in the region with kids who have disabilities.
It's called Respitality.
A $25,000 donation from Caesars Windsor Cares, The Class Action Fund, and Bluewater Pools and Spas will help Family Respite Services launch the year-long project.
"Those three partners have been able to allocate funds so that we can purchase these vouchers, these respitality experiences for families," said Community Relations Coordinator Alexandria Fischer.
Family Respite Services hopes to extend the program beyond one year if other local businesses donate gift cards or free passes. Activities like dining out, yoga, family outings, or an overnight stay at a bed and breakfast are in high demand.
"It's very challenging to be a caregiver, especially over the last few years," said Fischer. "The fact that we can offer some type of experience around self-care -- is just so crucial."
On top of the emotional and physical toll caring for a disabled child can take, caregivers often face financial burdens. A well-deserved break can make a major difference. Family Respite Services offers those families specialized care for their little ones with a trained provider.
Meanwhile, Fischer said the service is always looking for childcare providers.
"It's a part-time, paid opportunity. A wonderful way to interact with children and make a difference," she said. "Typically, students in a related program like nursing, social work, or child and youth care. It's a great way to use your education."
Currently, Family Respite Services has 600 support providers, and those who are interested can email info@familyrespite.org.
