The City of Windsor has begun its preparations for a possible ice storm Wednesday.
City crews began pre-salting major arteries like the E.C. Row Expressway Tuesday afternoon, as a winter storm system is bearing down on the region.
According to Environment Canada, Windsor-Essex could see snow showers Wednesday morning. By lunchtime, that snow could mix with or change to ice pellets, followed by freezing rain, with potential accretion of five to ten millimetres.
The City is warning drivers that conditions could become hazardous on untreated roadways or surfaces. Drivers are asked to go slow, allow plenty of space between themselves and vehicles in front, and give salt trucks and plows lots of extra room to maneuver safely.
While very little snow accumulation is expected, the City is also looking for volunteers for its Snow Angels snow removal program, which helps senior citizens and residents with physical disabilities who may not be able to shovel their own sidewalks. The City says the program is a good way to exercise and for secondary school students to earn community service hours.
