Goodfellows paper drive to continue despite plant closure

The closure of the Windsor Star printing plant on Friday will not impact this year's Goodfellows paper drive.

"We've been advised by the Windsor Star that it's their intention to not have it impact any local initiatives," said Chair of the Goodfellows Paper Drive, Bruce Tate. "Right now, it's just going to be a regular paper drive."

The annual fundraiser celebrates its 109th year in 2023, and Tate said the money collected accounts for 43 per cent of the Goodfellow's operating budget.

"That's a considerable amount. We're not going to walk away from it," said Tate.

The Windsor Star has always printed the papers used in the fundraiser, even before it was known as the Windsor Star.

"If there are some changes down the road, we'll just have to adapt," Tate said. "We still want to have that paper drive at the end of November."

Seventy-five workers lost their jobs with the printing plant's closure.

Postmedia plans to print the daily edition of the Windsor Star in the Toronto area, send it to London for insertion, and back to Windsor for delivery.
