Windsor police warn public about phony fundraiser

If you get a call from Windsor police asking you for money as part of a fundraiser, don't give them your money or any personal information.

Police issued a warning about that scam via social media on Friday, after a resident got a call from someone claiming to be from Windsor police, asking for donations.

When the caller asked the person for credit card and other personal information, the resident immediately contacted police.

Police said they don't cold-call people for any reason, including fundraising.

"The Windsor Police Service will never solicit funds," read a tweet from Windsor police. "If you receive a suspicious phone call that you think might be a scam, you should hang up immediately. You can also call our office with any questions."

If you have received a call like this, contact the Windsor police's financial crimes unit at (519) 255-6700, ext. 4330. If you have been a victim of this, or any other form of fraud, visit police headquarters to file a report or call the non-emergency line at (519) 258-6111.

Complete information on scams can be found on the Windsor police website.
